  ABOUT US

Fifty two years ago this October, a small group of community leaders banded together, formed a non-profit corporation and accepted the Ensign Thaxter House from the Wompatuck Men's Club with the promise to use and preserve this beautiful historic building as a vibrant and living part of Hingham's colonial tradition.

True to that promise, the Ensign John Thaxter House - the site of the Hingham Community Center - is today not only an enduring symbol of Hingham's heritage, but a building brimming with activity, a social and cultural resource for the entire South Shore. We are not subsidized by the Town of Hingham or any public source. We rely solely on annual memberships, program fees, space rentals and donations from friends who believe the Center's offerings are vital to improving the quality of life on the South Shore. The Center could not survive without your support.

The challenge for the Center, as for most non-profit agencies, is to meet the expectations and needs of those it serves each and every year. There can be no resting on past success. For us, this means we must find a way to expand our educational and enrichment programs while setting registration and room fees at reasonable rates.

Once again we call upon your generosity to assist us in achieving that commitment.
If you are currently a member, please renew or join at a higher level. If you are not
a member, please join in our effort and become one today. Returning the registration form with your tax deductible membership fee or donation will help ensure that the Center will continue on as it has for the past forty nine years.

The main function hall is available to rent for private parties on Saturday evenings or Sunday any time.  For availability, rates and advanced reservations, please phone the Center office at 781-749-9786.
